Oh Johnny

So Mr Lydon said some things about Green Day, and a couple of the kids have been covering it. Including Culture Bully and Incoherent Ramblings. . .

As for me?- No comment. Oh John. Oh Billie Joe. Though, like everyone else, I really have no idea what Plonk is. I'm not taking a side but I do want to say to Mr Lydon to just leave the Green Day boys alone and calm down. The face of punk has changed. (There may not be Punk anymore.) You're right that it's different but There's Nothing necessarily Wrong With That. Getting upset about what Punk is now just creates a mess and then there is arguing and yelling and negative feelings inside (yes that's right). But I'm going to throw in that Boulevard of Broken Dreams has been overplayed, Misery is their best song, and cleaned up, the Green Day boys look much nicer.

John Lydon has dismissed Green Day's punk credentials, insisting the band are "phoney" and "wank".

Lydon, former frontman of The Sex Pistols, the most significant punk group in music history, has launched a scathing attack on his American counterparts.
Dismissing both their attitude and style, Lydon insists Green Day have no understanding of the ethos of punk. He ranted: "Don't try and tell me Green Day are punk.
"They're not, they're plonk and they're bandwagoning on something they didn't come up with themselves. I think they are phoney."
Explaining the attitude of The Pistols in their '70s pomp, Lydon continued: "The government's against you, the police are on you.
"So there we are fending off all that and it pisses me off that years later a wank outfit like Green Day hop in and nick all that and attach it to themselves."
"They didn't earn their wings to do that and if they were true punk they wouldn't look anything like they do," he insisted.

Brendan Benson + Jack White + the Greenhornes

The songs have a stronger Brendan Benson feel to them, as if Jack is singing mutated Brendan songs, but it's not forced, so I don't want it to make it sound like it's bad. It's a new sound, and I like what I'm hearing and am excited for the full-length release. (To tell the truth, I was expecting something like Blanche slammed into Iggy Pop or something and I have no idea where I got that impression.) Enjoy and don't forget to say Thank You to Freaky. Totally off the record. All the money that could have been made with this has already been collected. This is me trying to make myself feel better. But remember, at the time of the inevitable digitally remastered re-release, be sure to pick up your own shiny new copy. For now, enjoy this beauty.

Lazy Sunday

Dresden Dolls - New!

The lovely duo's album, due out in April, has been advanced released (i verbed it?), and you can find a few tracks at Kill Your Co-Workers. And a secret, it seems. Ooh.

The album is titled Yes, Virginia, and the cover is gorgeous; Amanda and Brian are surrounded by a vivid, colorful bunch of flowers, very different from the gray cover of their previous release.

I've only listened to one song, but I can say Amanda's voice is just as powerful, and we still have the random exclamations, the pounding and melodic piano, the edgy viciousness. Enjoy and let me know what you think of the new stuff.

Says the guy at Kill Your Co Workers, "Don't worry, no crazy full band change-up on this one- and the trademark Dresden Dolls quirkiness is still quite intact. Lyrics regarding sex changes and do-it-yourself abortions (!) make it pretty apparent that they haven't given up their slightly bizarre take on the world, and Amanda's delivery and style is still as sexy as ever. No immediate favorite along the lines of "Coin-Operated Boy" is easy to find upon first listen, but I do have a few favorite tracks already..."

So it seems they are still full of malicious, exquisite trippiness. I'm excited.

I'd like to introduce a marvelous new blog, Take the Subway, a gift bestowed upon the world by Kid A.

Though only three posts old, Take the Subway has already demonstrated a keen eye for the despair and joy of living in today's world and an appreciation for all approaches to life. Pop culture references, the common man, and a colorful whimsy are nailed into a bleak but pastel landscape of the modern age and consummerism. Poetry is thus far the main focus, and Kid A writes with a free voice and an eye for reality easily distorted by self-awareness.

Anansi Boys

Neil Gaiman's site has been redesigned and looks sleeker, snazzier, and easier to navigate, though I don't know if I like the big Neil picture on the side.

Mr Gaiman has written short stories, novels, children's books, and comics; his Sandman graphic novels have received numerous awards, acclaim, and about a gazillion fans, his novels have hit bestsellers lists, and awards are practically being thrown at everything he's published. Coraline is excellent, as is Neverwhere. I loved Anansi Boys and have to admit I enjoyed it more than American Gods, though both are well-written, creepy, and fantastic. Neil said at a booksigning (I waited 6 hours for him to sign a stolen piece of NYC public property and I'm sorry to say it wasn't worth it and I should have taken off after the talk) that Anansi Boys is a return to the more personal, British style of writing, with an active omnipotent narrator, and I find that I enjoy this style more. American Gods is a sweeping, impersonal narrative, much less involved than Anansi Boy's. Also, his short story collection Smoke and Mirrors is a good read, though I feel some of the stories are of much higher quality than others. I recommend Chivalry, Murder Mysteries, The Goldfish Pool. . ., the two Raymond Chandler-esque werewolf stories, and just to read the whole thing with the awareness that not everything in it feels like Gaiman at his best. And, of course, he wrote with Terry Pratchett the amazing Good Omens, a must-read.

the missing Misfits album

Ok. Quick post and then I'm going to bed!

12 Hits from Hell is a fantastic album of 12 tracks of Misfits goodness.

There was a lot of nasties revolving around the album. Internal drama and politics and record company boo hoos all over the place, so the thing was, sadly, never officially released beyond promotion copies.

I think this is a perfect introduction album for those of you who want to get into the Misfits.It takes you through London Dungeon, Astro Zombies, and the like. Danzig's voice is amazing, and the lyrics are so wild you have to love it.

Luckily for you, Weapon of Sound has got it up, and if you skip on over there, you can get your Very Own Copy. So this was another traffic directing post and again, I hope WoS doesn't mind. Don't forget to be good kids and thank them, use the password, and keep checking WoS- they have a lot to offer.

a Mirrormask & some Breakfast on Pluto

Looks like Gaiman & McKean & the Jim Henson people's Mirrormask will be released on February 14, 2006. I saw this movie in theaters and - though I am a Gaiman fan - wasn't sure what to expect, but came out quite satisfied. The look of the movie is gorgeous and magical, and while the story faltered a a bit at some points, the overall film is enjoyable and a very pleasant watch.

I still can't find information on the Breakfast on Pluto DVD, which I am very much looking forward to purchasing, so I'll keep you kids updated on that if I ever find out. I can't get over that movie. BoP was absolutely charming and magical, with brilliant performances by Mr Murphy and Mr Neeson, and while it didn't hold entirely well in the reviews (but didn't do bad either), I give it an A+ or two thumbs up or whatever. It was one of my favorite of the year and possibly of like ever, and the book, while somewhat confusing (to me) is a great read; Patrick McCabe, who wrote Mondo Desperado, (also a great read, a interrelated short story collection which I think of as like Joyce's The Dubliners, but more interesting and bizzare and funny) is a master at voices, characters, and insanity. Henry Rollins who hosts Harmony in My Head (which, like the title of this blog happens to be a Buzzcocks song though I'm not sure if that's specifically what he's referring to) has been back for awhile after traveling the world. The gentleman over at Culture Bully has posted links to files of the show available for download, which you can find here. Mr Rollins' show is always a good listen and features all kinds of music (some really random stuff, too). Catch it on indie1031, where you can listen online. And then there is the Rollins Archive, which looks spectacular.

John Williams makes Harry Potter sound Good

I've been obsessed with John Williams and his work since I was in middle school, and I've recently uploaded my Harry Potter soundtracks onto my computer and found that they were all labeled and everything, which excited me a little too much. To share the excitement, here are a few selections from the Harry Potter OSTs.

Mr Williams' themes are gorgeous, rich, exciting, emotionally powerful. The world over knows the theme for Star Wars and Jaws and Indiana Jones - what is the probability that the same man is responsible for giving our generation so many memorable and famous themes?

Quality of the films notwithstanding, the Harry Potter scores introduced many new and lovely themes, including the famous Hedwig's theme. I remain convinced that Azakaban is one of his best recent works; the diversity of the score, ranging from the swinging, jazzy Knight Bus theme to the bubbly Aunt Marge's waltz to the gorgeous, powerful flying theme make for a high quality ost and a return to old school, lush, romantic scoring (versus, say, the soundtrack for Catch Me If You Can, which was different, and though for good reason, not entirely to my taste).

Every summer (except this past one, damn orientation week) I see Mr Williams conduct at the Hollywood Bowl, and every summer, am reminded how amazing this dude is. So download these HP tracks to see how you like his stuff. I didn't include a few of my favorite tracks- I'm saving those for later, so keep an eye out. If I get enough requests, for more, I'll see what I can do about getting the whole album up. But remember, if you like it, buy it, and I promise any John Williams soundtrack is worth the price. These are for sampling purposes, and so forth. If you even vaguely remember that the music was pretty fucking awesome, check these out.

Welcome to the Layer Cake Soundtrack

"You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like."

Layer Cake is a very fun, slick, dark movie with just the right ending, the kind when you think ten seconds before the credits, if they don't do so-and-so, this movie is going to Suck (or be unsatisfactory), and then they do so-and-so so that it exceeds your expectations and makes you want to weep for joy (as it were.) A story about classy-ish British cocaine dealers with some angry war criminals who also deal in drugs, a lot of twists and colorful characters. Starring Daniel Craig -who will be Mr Bond soon- and Colm Meany and Michael Gambon. It may seem a little too clean, but that's how it is. Based on the book by JJ Connolly.

The soundtrack features artists like Joe Cocker and Duran Duran and original scoring with vocals and aid from Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance and who also lent her voice to the haunting and gorgeous Gladiator OST. Remember, if you like it, consider buying it! (obligatory) Here are some of my favorites from the soundtrack.

These are tracks 3 & 11 off of Down in Albion. If you like them, check out the album. Feels slower and longer than a Libertines album, more layered, denser sound, perhaps? More subdued- though I really don't want to be comparing the two groups beyond saying, Uh, the singer sounds like half of the Libertines. . . (oh poor Mr Barat). . . I'll say the guitar is used differently, but I'll leave the comparison up to Libertines experts. Enjoy.

Reel Big Fish. Fantastic group, a lot of fun. Sarcastic, funny, inappropriate, and cheerfully profane. Their love songs are not happy, they know what they want ("First of all, I'd like to say. . ."). SoCal boys do it again with a great horn section, clever lyrics, and a solid, colorful rock sound.

I Want Your Girlfriend to be My Girlfriend Too- Reel Big Fish

Big Audio Dynamite II. You'll recognize the singer, and for good reason: it's Mick Jones of the Clash. His projects Big Audio Dynamite and BADII obviously never experienced the same recognition as the Clash, but the music is lovely. "Rush" was played on the radio, I believe. That's where I first heard it. . . The sound is cleaner than the Clash, probably owing to, in addition to many other things, the different genre, and featured are beats and sampling. If you like Mick's voice, I'd recommend this group. This song is slower and seems at first more subdued, unlike the more dance-friendly "The Globe" and "Rush," but the sentiments and thoughts are equally lovely and accesible. The backing synth vocals and faint rain-stick sounds that pop up every so often make me think of the music of the Legend of Zelda; but we've also got Mick, some acoustic and electric guitars, so that's definitely more a side note than a defining and important comment.

Innocent Child - BAD II (*mp4 format, use itunes*)

Mighty Mighty Bosstones. This is the Boston ska group's big hit, and Dicky Barrett's voice is fantastic. Just listen to his lovely Mighty Morning Show. He has the voice of an angel. . . an angel from Boston. He lives in Monrovia, CA, now, which happens to be, funnily enough, a location of very bad reception for the radio station he is on. I wonder how his kids listen to him. . . well, they should be at school anyway. Pleasant Surprises. . .

The Pleasant Surprise
Was that I loved King Kong. I wasn't sure if I would; the trailers had intrigued me, but all I thought was, What could they possibly do in it? It was an amazing movie, but one that should be experienced on the big screen. The visual in-your-face quality would be lost on your television, unless you have one of those nice gigantic ones. Also, I love movies set in this time period; we're far enough away to see all the romantic aspects and apply them to film, but still keep a sensitive eye to what was happening and alert the viewers (the beginning sequence shows the troubles of the time period). But this is the classic B adventure movie elevated to well-made, quality cinema. There's a special feel you get from such B movies set in this time, and it is maintained and expanded upon in King Kong.

I'd say the pleasant surprises resulted from me not following the film closely.
Pleasant surprise one: Colin Hanks is in it. He was adorable in Orange County and in this film portrays a nicely awkward but pure-of-heart type.
Pleasant surprise two: Kyle Chandler. Remember Early Edition? That guy. And not only is he very funny without practically ever smiling (as usual) he also plays a character who knows what he wants, rises above, and then goes right back into character. I had to admire the part they created for him. It was perfect and you couldn't even hate him.
Pleasant surprise three: Three hours didn't seem that long. Thank goodness.
Pleasant surprise four: Jack Black was able to play his part well. There were concerns about his natural ability to be comic whatever he does, but he is able to keep it to a minumum, bring it around when necessary, and abandon it for a few scenes. He keeps the wild eye movement going throughout the entire film, which was a little distracting, but it's excused. Many of the characters were nicely fleshed out with natures that were complex, contradictory, and real. Even the love story worked out, sorta. Nobody was overbearing or too perfect, but flawed and likeable. PS: The boat's captain was very handsome and had lovely eyes and a soft voice.

There's a lot of meat being smacked around in this film, the bugs are nasty, and the fatal plunge is indeed tragic. It's an excellent adventure movie, with dinosaurs and tramp steamers. It even has a philosophical thing going involving Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Sure, some people are concerned about the blonde thing, but Naomi Watts' part was well-written and performed, especially the complex relationship that is formed between her and Kong.

The Back Story
Friday night I went down to see Underworld: Evolution. Which was quite an adventure. First, down to 42nd Street, where all 700pm shows were sold out. So off to 34th Street to try our luck- nope. Again, all 7pm hour shows were sold out. Because my friend was unwilling to walk back up to 42nd to see the 1000pm show, we stayed at 34th St and saw the 700pm King Kong and then caught the 1055pm Underworld.

There's also a lot of meat smacked around in this movie. The meat is also sliced, stabbed, pulverized, shot, burned, totally fucked up by helicoptor propellors, and has really lame sex ten minutes into the film.

I was disappointed. The first Underworld is a fun watch; this was fun, but after awhile, the gratuitous violence just made the premise of this film obvious: let's kill as many people as possible too distract people from the plot.

The plot was what would be expected, but I think they could have done a much better job. The best parts were Scott Speedman's character's struggle over drinking blood and his attempt to eat normal food, but this is finished by the first fourth of the film. That and when Kate Beckinsale's Selene reacts to "death." It was in character, and, as a credit to the writers, nobody strayed from their characters, which is always a good thing.

So while this film could have been much better but ended up a generic video game, it did make me want to rent the first one again. At least that one is fun and tried. And anyone who says "Well, what did she expect?" is right. I don't regret it, and I'd say see it in the theater just for fun or don't bother. Rent the first one. (And, by the way, Bill Nighy's close ups had him chewing the scenery just a little.)
