To make up for the sadly-lacking-spirit-of-the-day post yesterday, here's something vaguely appropriate- Thomas Newman's wonderful score for the film Road to Perdition. Fantastic movie based on a amazing graphic novel- though I hafta admit that I'm not a fan of the books the follow (I'm a few chapters into Road to Purgatory, and sad to say, I'm not digging it), though the three shorter On the Roads that fill in missing space within the larger Perdition are up to par with the original story.
But Newman's inquisitive musical instincts can't be denied, and his melancholy string writing is leavened first with subtle uilleann pipe flourishes that echo the characters' Irish-American roots, then with savory, yet ever-restrained touches of his own ethnic-defying instrumental color and rhythmic accents. It's another moody and introspective gem, seasoned with some lively period jazz (courtesy of the Charleston Chasers, Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra, and Chicago Rhythm Kings) and a warm, final surprise: a duet of John M. Williams's autumnal title track performed by none other than stars Tom Hanks and Paul Newman (xXxX).Buy
The files aren't labeled but they appear labeled in iTunes- not sure how to change that, labeled them in iTunes, thought it usually changed the files, too ?
